Former government agent Cotton Malone is told to meet a friend at a museum in Denmark where he lives. Because he has worked with the friend before and knows that she could only be needing to meet for secretive reasons, he decides to stake out the museum the evening before the meeting. Knocked unconscious and dragged inside the museum, he wakes up to a sickly-sweet smell and the realization that he is covered in fuel. Narrowly escaping the fire that is quickly set to the building, Cotton is thrust into another adventure that takes him to the heart of a struggle that involves terrorism, the use of bio-warfare, and the draft of Alexander the Great.

This is a great book, though I can't quite figure out how the title is directly related. But no matter, the title is not important when you have a great thriller to read!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com41tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6164021624307773675.post-84129884471256004962008-01-02T16:17:00.000-05:002008-01-02T16:20:41.410-05:00The Subtle Knife
I read this book over the Christmas vacation, and I was enthralled! This is a great sequel to The Golden Compass. In order to keep from spoiling the book, I can't give you very many details from the beginning of the book, as they relate to the end of the previous book. However, Lyra teams up with a young man and they enter into a quest to save his father and find the truth about Dust. When his friend is nearly killed in a bomb blast at his Vienna office for Holocaust War Time Crimes and Inquiries, Gabriel Allon sets on the trail to discover who harmed his friend. His search takes him all over the world, eventually leading him to the man who helped try and cover up the world's worst genocide. And the man is living freely in Vienna, taking his coffee and paper everyday just like an ordinary free man. But Gabriel has another reason for wanting to bring this man to justice; when his mother was a girl, she was sent to Birkenau and was terrorized by the same man. Gabriel will stop at nothing to get justice, not just for his mother, but for everyone who was a victim.

Click here to buy a copy: A Death In Vienna by Daniel SilvaUnknownnoreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6164021624307773675.post-42927107834899606522007-12-13T19:29:00.000-05:002007-12-13T19:35:42.024-05:00Brandenburg Gate
This is a fascinating book about spies and espionage in East Germany right before the fall of the Berlin Wall. We follow the story of Dr. Rudi Rosenharte, a former Stasi spy, who is forced by his old employers to meet up with a former lover and agent, who he also knows is dead. In order to ensure his cooperation, the Stasi have captured his twin brother and are holding him in a notorious prison. Soon, the Americans and British find Rudi and force him to return to East Germany as a double agent. Rudi doesn't know who to trust, or who will make him do something that will end his beloved twin's life. A great novel with great cliffhangers! This book was so much fun to read, and the plot twists were incredible!

Click here to buy a copy: Brandenburg Gate by Henry PorterUnknownnoreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6164021624307773675.post-71399931215251587422007-12-13T19:13:00.000-05:002007-12-13T19:25:37.884-05:00A Wrinkle in Time
This is, by far, the best book that I have ever read. And the best part? There are four my right after it in the series! Any way, this is the story of Meg, who has mousy hair, glasses, and a very short temper. She is always getting in trouble, especially when people make fun of her baby brother and the fact that her dad has been gone from the family for almost a year. And then one day, a terrible storm ravages the house and a strange woman shows up, talking of tesseracts, other dimensions, and that she knows where their father is. Of course, Meg doesn't believe her, but at her baby brother's request (he's actually a six-year-old genius), Meg and Charles Wallace go off to find the strange woman. They find themselves on a whirl-wind adventure across time and space, discovering the best things about themselves and that they must have courage if they want to save their father.

I love this book, and I read it and its partners at least once a year. If you liked The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, you will definitely like this book! Young Lyra lives at Jordan College in Oxford, but we realize that the Oxford she inhabits is in a time very different from ours. In her world, some mythical group called The Gobblers are kidnapping children. No one knows what is really going on, but Lyra intends to find out. Her adventures take her to the very northern regions of the world on a quest to discover who the Gobblers are, what they are doing to children, and stop them at all costs.

This was a great adventure, and like I said, much like CS Lewis' works. Soon Leah and her four friends, now grandmothers and great grandmothers, band together to help Elise. The four women made a covenant when they were in Auschwitz that if they survived the war, they would do anything and everything within their power to make sure that they each lived happily for the rest of their days. As the women reunite to help find Elise's family, we learn of more serious problems plaguing Israel - the threat of Hamas and the lives that are destroyed at the hands of terrorists. And we discover, most importantly, that not just Jews are harmed in the fighting. This teen novel follows a young girl named Bella who moves back in with her somewhat estranged father. She is not looking forward to living in his small town, and is absolutely dreading her first day at her new school. But soon she discovers Edward Cullen and her life will never be the same. Because Edward...is a vampire.

This novel gets a little sluggish around the middle, but soon picks up. It's a great twist on the vampire myth, and its pretty fun to read, if you like that sort of thing. (which I do....)

Click this link to purchase a copy: Twilight by Stephenie MeyerUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6164021624307773675.post-85401435844243423492007-08-10T15:27:00.000-05:002007-08-10T15:35:04.860-05:00The Dark Is Rising<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_nnfWiOQ3OC2NaP6JmR6_2ovQp-mF78j1-oQdO-6pSAWDlDzlBT-1V-HzyE5xYqKLUttzLrw_5daeHNNw1TP6YsN3JgYPCOE3SyVxIqKZDcbp5OHquqSeW-_ZbGG0komqhm9MGLJ2Pzg/s200/dark.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5097173051918107250" />
If you like The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe, you'll love The Dark is Rising series. I just finished the first book, and it was fantastic! Young Will turn eleven years old in Midwinter and learns a secret about himself. He is the last of the Old Ones, a group of immortals born throughout time that are destined to defend the world against the Dark. Will must learn about his new powers and harness his abilities in order to find the Six Signs that will drive back the dark from destroying England during the Christmas season. This is a beautifully told tale, and kids will love it! It's coming to theatres soon as well, and the previews look pretty good! If nothing else, read it for fun! The Dark is Rising by Susan CooperUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6164021624307773675.post-38280935092813043132007-07-28T18:59:00.000-05:002007-11-23T13:35:39.388-05:00The Alexandria Link<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYFeosu3YNpcIim24rGaF8yKOkREgW2Tj9dMKSCfJXXI5FF_OlNlY_b840RtNBWwZGSwxXXTld1Wy3EseA90DozFyAvf6oBlnPzzE0MYTq-KBFnJEHNLrWd5WVUdg_gVZw5OdQ6DsxcT8/s200/12419721.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5136106280367476642" />
Another great read by Steve Berry! This time Cotton Malone has to battle the bad guys and his ex-wife as he tries to save his son from international kidnappers. He soon realizes the kidnapping was nothing more than a ploy to get him to help them find the fabled lost Library of Alexandria. This book has it all - great action scenes, memorable dialog, and bad and good guys galore. A very fun read littered with the odd facts about the Library of Alexandria. If you liked the Templar Legacy you'll really enjoy its sequel!

Click here to purchase a copy: The Alexandria Link by Steve BerryUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6164021624307773675.post-11909727877861097492007-06-30T17:48:00.000-05:002007-06-30T18:05:45.886-05:00A Thousand Splendid Suns
I can't say enough about this book. It's been a long time since I've read such an emotionally involved novel. The story is about two Afghan women, two decades apart in age, whose lives tragivally intertwine in the least desirable of situations. Mariam, the older of the two, has had a hard life and is married to an abusive husband. Laila, the younger woman, grew up with a father dedicated to education and the rights of women. After the Taliban came to Afghanistan, Laila's life was completely uprooted, leading her into the life of Mariam. In the end, the two women bring more to each other than either thought possible. This is a haunting novel of the ravages of war and the plight of the Afghan, male and female alike. One can't help but be moved by this novel. I must admit; it was painful for me to read this book at many points. But at the end, it was worth it. Hosseini is a brillant writer and I guarantee that if nothing else, you will be a more compassionate person for having read it. Ross. What a fantastic read! His novel chronicles the involvement of the Swiss in the Nazi war effort. Yes, we know that the Swiss are neutral, but that doesn't mean they don't have sympathies! Ross weaves a powerful and adventure-packed story in Switzerland that takes a Swiss woman, an American pilot, and a Russian Major on a whirlwind adventure to stop the Nazis and the Russians from forming another pact. Full of excitement, twists and turns, this novel is what you hope for when you read fiction set during this time frame. If you are looking for an adventurous summer read, this is the book for you! I thouroughly enjoyed this novel and give it two thumbs up! Chance Murphy is a thirteen-year-old boy who wants nothing more than to be a hero like his grandfather and to have a perfect family. His propensity for trouble and his envy of his best friend Dan's perfect family lead to crazy schemes and entertaining mishaps. Once he's managed to infiltrate his friend's family, Chance learns that the grass isn't always greener on the other side of the lawn! I highly recommend this book to EVERYONE! The stores in my Barnes & Noble region picked it as their Regional Recommends title. If you don't know, B&N has a new program where the home office picks a book and all the bookstores put their bookselling power behind it. Then we started doing the same thing at the regional level, and soon we will be doing it at the store level. But I digress: The book is about an 18-year-old girl from Tasmania whose mother dies. The girl is orphaned in the world and only has one friend to care for her. Her friend realizes she needs to see the world and buys her a one-way ticket to New York City. Once there, Rosemary Savage looks for a job and finds one at a bookstore called the Arcade. Staffed by a bunch of irregulars (who isn't at a bookstore??) Rosemary is shoved into a shady deal to recover a lost manuscript of Herman Melville. She comes of age in the novel and learns, finally, the secret of lost things. I picked this book up because I liked the cover; I know, I know, you're not supposed to judge a book by it's cover! But as it turned out, the cover was not only fantastic, the book was as well! The story takes place in post-World War One Berlin. The main character is a Russian Jew by the name of Esther Solomnova. She works as a secretary for a shady Russian businessman who calls himself Prince Nick. Prince Nick has a grand scheme to rescue a patient from the local mental asylum and groom her to be Grand Duchess Anastasia. As Esther grooms "Anna" to present herself as the Grand Duchess, people all around the two women start to die, and Anna's fits of terror multiply. Esther and a Berlin detective try to hunt down the killer in a series of twists and turns all the way up to Hitler's rise to power. There is a HUGE plot twist in the last three pages of the novel. I was stunned when I read it, and then I couldn't believe I had missed all of the clues! This is a fantastic read and I highly recommend it to everyone! Can't wait to get your hands on it?
